Myths and Misconceptions about Low Back Pain - Part 2
Myth #2
“Ice is better than heat for low back pain.”
When it comes to managing low back pain, using ice or heat can be helpful in relieving discomfort. But how do you know which one to use?
Certainly people have their opinions about the topic and here will try to delve deeper into it, but keep in mind that there are no hard and fast rules and that what’s best for you maybe different depending on your personal medical history.
Ice is typically recommended during the first 48 to 72 hours after an injury or when pain is acute. It helps to reduce inflammation and swelling by constricting blood vessels. Ice packs wrapped in a towel are usually applied to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
Heat is often used for chronic or ongoing back pain, as it can increase blood flow and promote relaxation. Heat packs or warm baths can promote healing if done in small intervals.
It's important to talk to your healthcare provider about which option is best for you and to avoid using either therapy for too long or at too high of a temperature, as this can cause burns or other tissue damage.
Remember that neither ice nor heat are cures for low back pain and that the best thing you can do if you have low back pain is to be treated by a healthcare provider who can provide more longer lasting results.
