Leg Pain Q & A

What causes leg pain?

Leg pain can be the result of a number of conditions, including natural wear-and-tear, overuse, a degenerative disease like arthritis, or a traumatic injury. Common leg injuries include:

  • Muscle sprain or muscle strain
  • Ligament or tendon tear
  • Tendon or joint inflammation
  • Muscle cramp or growing pain
  • Meniscus tear
  • Stress fracture

Leg pain may also originate from an issue in your back, such as a herniated disc or sciatica, which is pain that travels down the sciatic nerve from your low back through your leg.

When should I see a doctor about my leg pain?

If your leg pain doesn’t go away after a few days or doesn’t respond to home care treatments, such as over-the-counter pain relievers, you should schedule an appointment at Pain Medicine Group.

The team at Pain Medicine Group may be able to diagnose the cause of your pain after a physical exam and discussion of your medical history. Diagnostic tests may also be needed, such as an X-ray or MRI, to determine the exact cause of your leg pain.

Other indications that you may need medical help for your leg pain include:

  • Pain during or after walking
  • Pain that persists or worsens
  • A popping or grinding sound during the initial injury

Whether your pain is dull or stabbing, constant or off-and-on, the team at Pain Medicine Group may be able to help.

How is leg pain treated?

Treatment for your leg pain depends on the underlying cause, but your doctor at Pain Medicine Group works closely with you to develop a treatment plan that not only reduces your discomfort but also improves function, getting you back to doing the things you love without discomfort.
